The Aging Athletic Shoulder Action Plan

As you explore the athletic side of 45+, the shoulder joint can be a common area of frustration for active, older individuals. Many patients that come to see me blame years of abuse for their "chronically" inflamed shoulder, and lament that they are destined for surgery and/or injections. Ultimately, I am able to disabuse my patient’s shoulder pessimism with a brief explanation of the cause of most shoulder pain, and by providing them with a Daily Action Plan for getting them out of pain and back to their sport.

Components of of the Daily Action Plan:

1) Test - Find your baseline range of motion.

2) Soft Tissue Release - Improve range of motion by releasing muscular tension.

3) Joint Mobilizations - Improve shoulder function by improving shoulder joint positions.

4) Therapeutic Exercise - Build strength in the muscles that stabilize the shoulder.

5) Retest - Demonstrate improvement by retesting your baseline movement.

Is this right for you?

A quick personal message Dr. Dereck Steffe, a leading shoulder specialist in Evergreen, Colorado:

THIS is for the person who thinks that their shoulder pain is something they have to live with, or for those whose shoulder pain came on all of sudden and you want quick help and shoulder pain relief.

The clicking when you raise your arm, the jabbing shooting shoulder pains that literally bring tears to your eyes or that constant ache that either keeps you from doing things or the pain you know you will suffer from IF you move your arm the wrong way or pick up even moderatly heavy objects DOES NOT have to be a way of life! If you are asking yourself, "is my rotator cuff torn?" Or you just need relief from chronic "knots" in your shoulder," read on.

As a shoulder specialist over the last 15+ years, I’ve been working and helping people aged 35+ find relief from and fix acute AND chronic shoulder pain – and what I know is the vicious cycle of rest and injections, and medications will do absolutely nothing to get to the root cause of most types of shoulder pain… no matter what you have been told.

I have grown increasingly frustrated with the number of people suffering needlessly, so I’ve written and published a 6 page report that details the 6 simple things most people can do to relieve shoulder aches or pains, naturally…… and I want you to have it at no charge.

Now, I don’t know if these 6 things will relieve you of your shoulder pain completely. And, I can’t promise that what has worked for most of my patients and clients over the last 15+ years will also work for you. However, reading this report has to be better than spending another day “resting”, accepting it, masking it with injections and medication or just thinking, “it’s my age”.

If your shoulder pain is affecting your job, your ability to keep active, threatens your independence or hinders family leisure time… then you really need to read this free report.

I want you to imagine how life would be in five years from now if you DON’T get a grip on your shoulder pain NOW. How will your shoulder pain affect your job? Your self-worth and your independence? Will you be a fun person to be with? Or, even live with? Ok, you get my drift…

Five Common Shoulder Pain Symptoms

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

  • Shoulder Pain when you roll over onto the wrong side while sleeping...."I haven't had a full night sleep in months, everytime I roll onto my left Shoulder, I wake up."
  • Increased shoulder pain or stiffness when you first get out of bed in the morning..."It takes a little while to get going."
  • Annoying aching Shoulder Pain when reaching above your head..."It's frustrating not being able to use my right arm to even put dishes away in the cupboard."
  • Shoulder Joint Pain when putting on a shirt..."It hurts to get dressed in the morning"
  • Difficulty throwing or even shaking hands..."I can't play with my kids anymore."

Five Mistakes Patients With Shoulder Pain Make

Avoid these mistakes.........find the right solution for YOUR Shoulder pain?

Doing Nothing & Accepting A Diagnosis For Thier Shoulder Pain.

Have you had an X-Ray/MRI or been given an orthopedic diagnosis - Arthritis? Degenerative changes? Torn Rotator Cuff? Torn labrum? Tendinitis? Have you ever been told "There's nothing you can do to fix it" - "It's just a normal part of aging" or "You'll just have to live with it"? Although these are common diagnoses or things you may have been told, did you know there is still a way to get better? A way to improve or even eliminate your Shoulder Pain. The problem is that most patients have had improper or incomplete treatment. This leads to more and more frustration and they start to believe they are out of options. Please don't give up...I've seen this many times and I'm here to tell you there is ALMOST ALWAYS something that can be done!

Getting Advice on Google, WebMD or Youtube

These days we can find A LOT of information online. Some of that information is great, but some of it is incorrect or just flat out wrong. The danger is that each individual's injury, symptoms and health status is unique to them. What may seem like good advice and may be helpful for some, can actually make things worse for others. So, it's important to get proper advice, from a shoulder specialist, that is a specific shoulder treatment to YOU and your specific problem.

Resting Too Long

Resting immediately after an injury happens definitely has its benefits, and can ease your shouler pain. But if you rest for too long your shoulder can get very stiff, start to develop scar tissue, and your muscles become very weak. This makes your Shoulder Pain worse and leads to more problems...and not just with your shoulder. This is why its important to get proper treatment sooner rather than later.

Relying On Pain Medicaton

Taking pain medications can have immediate effects and be very helpful to work through an ACUTE injury, but you shouldn't have to rely on them for very long. The pain relief is temporary. Unfortunately, many patients have relied on pain pills for years "just to get through the day" or "keep up with their normal activities". If this is the case, you're really just masking the pain... and this is NOT a real solution for Shoulder Pain!

Strengthening While in Pain

"You need to strengthen your shoulder." This is the advice given to a lot of people currently living with shoulde pain. While it is true that your shoulder probably does need to be strengthened, doing so while in pain is almost always a bad idea. When you are in pain, you will not move correctly. Doing shoulder exercses with poor movement patterns will always make things worse. What you really need is to figure out the underlying cause of your Shoulder Pain and address THAT!

The Biggest Mistake Patients Make Is......

"What's the best way to treat a shoulder injury?"

Dereck is by far the best PT professional that I have ever worked with. He is knowledgeable, caring, and is a consummate professional in his field. -Lynne W.

"Dereck is a real pro. He did a great job helping my son recover from knee surgery, and me getting rid of lower back pain. He put us both on the road to recovery quickly. Dereck knows exactly what he needs to do, and how to do it. He works the muscles affecting the injured area, and provides the right exercises to keep you strong and healthy when you’re done with PT. He’s generous with his deep knowledge of health and the healing process. And he’s a great guy."

-John E.

"I worked with Dereck for over two years. I had a severe orthopedic issue and went from taking small painful steps to running a half marathon & participating triathlons. Derek's treatments, strength & movement exercises made all the difference. His deep knowledge of physiology allowed me to trust that I could run again. Derek encouraged me to get past my fear to get back to running. I am incredibly thankful that he did"
